A Dance Song

When I met Laurie 40 years ago it was a warm summer night and I got the shivers and the next day I told my cousin that I was going to marry that lady.

                     A Dance Song

    If you wanna write a dance poem
       you must pump a dance song
                right into your head
            and every stanza or two 
                   leap to your feet
              and shake and shiver.
                  All the bogeymen
         will run for the hills because
              the boogie has begun.
                 They cannot exist
                      side by side,
                there ain’t no room
                 on the dance floor
                     for their kind.

           The party begins slowly,
       someone bumps the volume
  and the persuasion hits your chest
               with the percussion.
           The sound surrounds you
           and if your love is nearby
you begin to recollect that dancing
      is merely a vertical expression
              of a horizontal desire.
             A biological imperative
            takes hold.  Who are we
                  to fight millennia
                of hard wired funk-
                      it is as if our
       very survival depends upon it.

      There is a reason why her hips
     rhyme so perfectly with her lips
            and when did shoulders
       and syncopation get so sexy?
          When two begin to zero in,
       the world around them shrinks
          and only they are in focus,
                  there is very little,
               short of catastrophe,
           that will keep them apart.
 
And that is what a good dance song
         will do, populate our minds
         and our land with fecundity.
