I head out today to get on a roof, it's wet, cold- I don't want to do it. I'd rather stay here and drink coffee but that's not one of the options. I am glad I don't do this more than 4 hours a day.
I worked with wood long after it had been replaced by steel and concrete. But the wharves and piers that were in place needed upkeep until it was their turn to be replaced. So I made a career of preserving old structures. Now I’m an old structure trying to preserve myself. If only I were made of wood. But no. I have a skill set that has no application.
Once I hit the early 40's I got out of framing and building houses. I only worked on old places in our town of Frederick, Maryland, most of them built in the 1800's. I loved redoing some of the grand places with amazing crown, chair, window, and door trim. Speaking of trying to keep ourselves preserved, I spend a bit of time each day doing a lot of stretches.
No wood?
No way!

It’s really a modern tragedy barely avoided and so I stayed with wood and that has made all the difference…
I like this poem.
